CRIME SEQUENCE RECONSTRUCTION
Primary Suspect: The investigation identifies elements of the UK government as the primary suspect for the sabotage of the Nord Stream pipelines.
Boris Johnson: Boris Johnson's communications with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz during early September 2022 were pivotal in emphasizing the UK’s stance on reducing reliance on Russian energy, particularly regarding the Nord Stream pipelines. Johnson highlighted Germany's commitment to moving away from Russian dependence, asserting that both nations shared the urgency to bolster energy security in light of Russia's aggressive actions. His conversations aimed to ensure that Germany remained aligned with the UK’s position on the necessity of curtailing Russian energy supplies, particularly as tensions escalated over the implications of the gas pipeline operations amidst the ongoing conflict in Ukraine
Echoes in deep: Immediately after an ASW planes on routine patrol - German, US Navy, Swedish and Dutch ASW asset detects an anomaly near the Nord Stream pipeline, leading to an immediate alert. Diplomatic channels heat up as Germany and France discuss the findings, leading to a high-tension meeting at NATO's MARCOM. The UK is put in the spotlight, having to clarify their naval activities, while the alliance navigates through trust issues, culminating in a strengthened but wary NATO maritime policy. This scenario, while speculative, has high degree of probability.
Task Force 61/2 in early September: There were detection efforts related to potential underwater threats near the pipelines. Data implies that an anti-submarine warfare (ASW) planes may have detected unusual underwater activity. Russia was monitoring situation. This activity did not originate from the Andromeda asset, raising suspicions about other possible actors or assets involved in the area around the Nord Stream pipelines during critical times. This narrative signals that there were heightened security concerns about underwater activities potentially aiming to sabotage the pipelines already in early September, which aligns with speculation around state-sponsored actions during the period leading up to the incidents later in September 2022
The price cap and the Act of retorsion: Russia’s Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak stated that they would not supply oil to any country that imposed such restrictions, calling the proposals absurd and asserting that they could destabilize the global oil market. On the same day, Russia also cited economic sanctions as a reason for lowering gas supplies through the Nord Stream pipeline, reinforcing the idea that their operational decisions were, in part, retaliatory against Western sanctions
Zelensky and Nordstream: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky appeared to be aware of potential threats to the Nord Stream pipelines, expressing concerns about Russia leveraging energy as a weapon against Europe. He indicated that the threat posed by Russia outweighed the economic pressures faced by Western nations due to rising energy costs. In a statement on September 3, 2022, he noted that "instead of tanks and missiles, Russia is using energy as a weapon" and warned that the country was preparing a "decisive blow" against Europe’s energy sector as winter approached. This suggests that Zelensky had insights into perpetrator´s strategic intentions, including the potential for aggressive actions targeting Nord Stream pipelines. The many meetings between UK and Ukrainian officials and the latter UK´s support to Ukraine to purchase more gas prior to the Nordstream attack hints that the UK was the rogue actor.
UK´s preparatory actions: Prior to the incidents involving the Nord Stream pipelines, the UK implemented several preemptive measures related to energy bills and supply security. On September 4, 2022, Liz Truss highlighted the growing energy crisis and began discussions about preparing for potential cuts in oil and gas supplies from Russia, which was described as a decisive blow in its energy warfare against Europe. This included proactive steps to support Ukraine in stockpiling energy supplies ahead of worsening conditions in Europe due to potential gas supply cuts from Russia. Additionally, Truss emphasized the need for the UK to ramp up its energy supply through various means, such as negotiating long-term energy contracts and planning to increase domestic oil and gas production, including lifting the fracking ban. These actions were aimed at enhancing energy resilience in light of the anticipated disruptions from the Nord Stream operations.
Liz Truss becomes UK´s PM: As strong as the storm will be, Britain is stronger," was intended to convey confidence in the UK's ability to navigate the turbulent geopolitical landscape, which was characterized by surging energy prices and threats to energy supplies, notably from Russia. In her initial speeches, Truss outlined plans to ramp up domestic energy production, lift the ban on fracking, and establish a new Energy Supply Taskforce to secure long-term energy contracts. These measures were designed as responses to the pressures arising from potential disruptions, including those related to the Nord Stream pipelines which were under scrutiny due to concerns about Russian energy interference.
European Lehman Brothers event, Margin calls against European Energy utilities: Sanctions against Russian energy since 2014 have increased and fluctuating energy prices in Europe.
Pipeline reopening voices: Public and some political factions in Germany push for reopening pipelines. Swiss court decides that the Nord Stream 2 AG case is admissible and the the company gets next half year out-of-bankruptcy extension.
Post Brexit Global Britain: The UK's foreign policy faced challenges in effectively countering European reliance on Russian gas, as it had limited leverage over EU energy policy, which remained heavily influenced by the need for stable energy supplies. This diminished the UK's ability to assert itself globally, highlighting a dependency on diplomatic alliances that Brexit was supposed to alleviate. The destruction of German-Russian energy and economic co-dependence has elevated Britain´s position. Later after Nordstream affair Rishi Sunak stated that Global Britain program has failed.
Liz Truss: Assuming the role of Prime Minister, she portrays herself as a strong leader determined to protect British interests. The phrase "As strong as the storm will be, Britain is stronger" suggests a narrative of resilience. It implies that despite expected foreseen external pressures, such as rising threats or instability in energy supply, the UK—under Truss’s leadership—will navigate these challenges effectively. This line could evoke a sense of national pride and commitment to security, emphasizing a defensive stance against any accusations or implications of aggression related to the Nord Stream incident.
Worsening security situation in the Baltic sea: As a response Russia launches series of "anti-terrorist drills" in early September suggesting a dual focus on both conventional military readiness and responses to emerging threats, potentially reflecting rising fears of instability or aggression in the area.
The UK sabotaged turbines delivery: UK played a pivotal role in the Nord Stream affair, particularly through its imposition of sanctions that complicated the maintenance and delivery of critical turbine components supplied by Siemens for Nord Stream AG. These sanctions created legal barriers that influenced the contract stipulations with Gazprom, as the maintenance agreement was governed under UK law, which led to significant delays in the necessary documentation for turbine deliveries from Canada and Germany back to Russia.
The Breaking point: On 15th of September political, naval activity exploded. Norwegians seemed to intercept some intelligence about the impending attack on European Key infrastructure. They shared first the intel with European allies (Germany, France) and then with the USA through planned high level meetings in Norfolk. Jens Stoltenberg also changed his schedule to attend. The race was on to stop perpetrators, protect pipelines, and de-escalate the tension. Time was of an essence!
This interpretation is one of several possible constructs based on the available data, not a factual recounting of events confirmed by actors (journalists, investigator´s job) and should be explored, examined and confirmed by official international investigation. This timeline is the largest available data-set exploring the Nordstream affair. The investigation has been conducted based on best criminal case practices and took 2+ years to do. (206, 207, 226)
Events in chronological order grouped - SEPTEMBER 2022
On 1 September 2022 Prime Minister Boris Johnson made a speech a Sizewell on the future of energy.
"I’ll tell everybody who thinks hydrocarbons are the only answer and we should get fracking and all that that offshore wind is now the cheapest form of electricity in this country offshore wind is nine times cheaper than gas because of the insanity of what Putin has done
and that’s why it makes sense for us to become more self-reliant and of course it is entirely clean and green so renewables are not only helping us to defeat climate change they are also helping to keep bills lower than they would otherwise be in this crisis what Putin has done is to launch a kind of kamikaze attack on the world economy
He doesn’t care how much pain Russia suffers
He believes that ultimately we will flinch, that western politicians do not have the stomach for the fight
He believes that we will give up on Ukraine, give in to his aggression and go back to mainlining his hydrocarbons
And I have to tell you he is wrong
He is wrong about his assumptions about the British people
I think he is wrong about other European governments too by the way
I talked to Olaf Sholz last night and it is absolutely clear that Germany is resolute in moving away from dependence on Russian
And Putin in this strategy is going to fail
So we are helping people now with the cost of living and of course there will be more cash to come in the months ahead..."
On 1 September 2022 Boris Johnson to give speech on energy security amid reports govt will sign off new nuclear plant Sizewell C
Britiains Defence minister Ben Wallace on 2 September 2022: "Submarines rather than ships could be the Royal Navy's future"
On 2 September 2022 HMS Audacious – one of Britain’s newest operation nuclear submarine – has completed her second Mediterranean patrol, conducting maritime security operations for the UK and her #NATO allies. After six months of near continuous operations, Audacious returned to Souda Bay to undergo maintenance - Specialist divers were flown out from the UK, running over the entire length of the submarine’s 97-metre-long hull with what is effectively a giant, heavy duty dental hygienist’s tooth polisher – the bristles on the brushes strong enough to sweep away barnacles, but not too firmly that the black tiles which cover Audacious and are key to her stealth are not damaged or dislodged..
It is odd that the attack submarine which could also be used for undercover operations after trials got hull cleaning which is done before missions. Was this submarine involved in the plot or another one which returned to the UK port mere few days after Nordstream was attacked? HMS S120 Ambush returned just a short time after the attack on Nordstream under odd circumstances. Those early posts explore this possibility: (004, 006, 008, 009, 012, 014, 016, 019)
On 1,2,3 Sept 2022 - USA: US Military Helicopters Circled Around Future Nord Stream Leaks For Hours In September. In particular, at the beginning of the month, a US Navy Sikorsky MH-60R Seahawk helicopter loitered over the location of pipelines in the Baltic Sea near Bornholm for three days in a row on September 1, 2 and 3.

FlightRadar shows a few flights there on that day
It is curious that on September 2, almost in parallel with the US military, a military helicopter NH90 of the Dutch Navy was flying in the vicinity of Bornholm Island, probably observing the activities of the Americans.

In all cases, the trajectories of the US military speak of observation flights or loitering with other targets over a specific section of the water area. Helicopters that made sorties on the night of September 22-23 and 25-26 have especially confusing tracks. (177, 181)

German, French and Dutch companies are jointly 49% shareholders of Nord Stream 1 pipelines.
On 1 September 2022 Russia’s Sarmat ICBM are declared operational. Russia’s RS-28 Sarmat heavy intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) has entered operational service. A 1 September 2023 report from Russian news agency TASS quoted Yury Borisov, the head of Russia’s Roscosmos state space corporation, as saying that day that the Sarmat system “has assumed combat alert posture”.
One of six new Russian strategic weapons heralded by Russian President Vladimir Putin on 1 March 2018, the Sarmat ICBM was designed to replace Russia’s ageing R-36 (NATO designation SS-18 ‘Satan’) ICBMs and has thus been given the NATO designation SS-X-30 ‘Satan II’.
Russia successfully test-launched its Sarmat ICBM for the first time from the Plesetsk spaceport in Russia’s northern Arkhangelsk Region on 20 April 2022. The Makayev Rocket Design Bureau then received a production contract from the Russian Ministry of Defence for Sarmat ICBMs on 16 August 2022.
Russia's Medvedev threatens on 2 September 2022 'no gas for Europe if Brussels adopts price cap'
“We will simply not supply oil and petroleum products to such companies or states that impose restrictions, as we will not work non-competitively” Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak told reporters Thursday, according to state news agency TASS.
“The price cap is specifically designed to reduce Russian revenues and Russia’s ability to fund its war of aggression whilst limiting the impact of Russia ́s war on global energy prices, particularly for low and middle-income countries,” the G7 finance ministers said. (031, 105, 106, 107)
Novak has called the proposals to impose restrictions “completely absurd” and said they could destroy the global oil market, TASS reported. “Such attempts will only destabilize the oil industry, the oil market,” he said.
On 3 September 2022 Russia kept one of its main gas supply routes to Europe shut on Saturday, stoking fears of winter fuel shortages and spotlighting differences between Gazpromand Germany's Siemens Energy over repair work on the pipeline.
On 3 September 2022 Gazprom has completely Stopped Supplies on Nord Stream for an Indefinite Period. In a statement, Gazprom said it had discovered "oil leaks" in the turbine during a planned three-day maintenance operation and that "until it is repaired ... the transportation of Nord Stream gas has been completely suspended." On its Telegram page, the company posted a photo of cables covered in brown liquid, AFP reported.
Earlier in the day, the Kremlin warned that the future operation of the Nord Stream gas pipeline, one of Gazprom's main supply routes, was at risk due to a lack of spare parts.
"There are no technical reserves, only one turbine is working," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.
"So the reliability of the operation, of the whole system, is at risk," he said, adding that it was "through no fault" of Russian energy giant Gazprom.
Turbine maker Siemens Energy said the oil leak, which it blamed on Gazprom, was "not a technical reason to stop work".
"Such leaks do not normally affect the operation of the turbine and can be sealed on site," he said, adding that "no maintenance work has been contracted".
Other news describe the event on 3 September 2022: Russia cuts off gas exports to Europe via Nord Stream indefinitely. On Friday, Russian state energy giant Gazprom said it would not resume flows through the pipeline on Saturday as planned because it had detected an oil leak at its Portovaya compressor station. The pipeline has been shut since Wednesday for maintenance.
The Nord Stream 1 pipeline is a key artery carrying Russia’s vast gas supplies to Europe, accounting for about 35% of Europe’s total Russian gas imports last year.
Since June, Gazprom has slashed flows through Nord Stream 1 to just 20% of its capacity, citing maintenance issues and a dispute over a missing turbine caught up in Western export sanctions.
Engie said the shutoff was the result of “a disagreement between the parties on the application of contracts.”
Under Johnson, Britain was one of the first nations to donate weapons to Ukraine as the countdown to the Russian invasion began last winter. While nervous European leaders dawdled, Johnson led the pack. (002, 003, 105)
UK news from 4 September 2022 Gas prices likely to hit new highs as Russia shuts pipeline indefinitely a growing number of UK manufacturers have said they are already cutting production or making job cuts as a direct result of “out of control” energy bills.
On 4 September 2022 Liz Truss warns she will make unpopular decisions as prime minister and defends tax cuts for wealthy
On 5 September 2022 Boris Johnson delivers Plutonium Jubilee for Britain's nuclear test veterans
In an open letter to all those affected by the Cold War radiation experiments which knowingly and intentionally exposed thousands of servicemen to nuclear fallout, he offered his “profound thanks” but stopped short of the apology veterans demanded.
“You forged and perfected our country’s protective shield and then made certain that it worked,” he said. “Today, 67 million people in the UK - and our NATO allies - live in the safety that you helped to provide.”
On 5 September 2022 Markets Wobble as Britain Gets a New Prime Minister and Energy Worries Grow. Liz Truss, the Conservative Party’s choice, will face a falling British pound and myriad economic troubles. Elsewhere in Europe, markets started the week on shaky footing after the Russian energy giant Gazprom said on Friday that it would not restart the flow of natural gas between Russia and Germany through the Nord Stream 1 pipeline on Saturday as expected. Natural gas prices jumped, and stocks slumped.
According to Truss's LinkedIn profile and other sources, she worked at Shell from 1996 to 1997, after graduating from the University of Oxford with a degree in Politics, Philosophy and Economics. During her time at Shell, Truss worked in the downstream division of the company, which deals with refining, distribution, and marketing of oil and gas products. As a commercial and finance analyst, she would have been involved in market analysis, financial planning, and commercial strategy development related to downstream operations. After leaving Shell in 1997, Truss went on to work for other companies in the energy and telecommunications industries, as well as in public policy and government positions. (091)
On 6 September 2022 Truss Drafts £130 Billion Plan to Freeze UK Energy Bills
On 8 September 2022 - UK: PM Liz Truss's opening speech on the energy policy debate
"Firstly, by ramping up supply... we have created a new Energy Supply Taskforce under the leadership of Maddy McTernan. They are already negotiating new long term energy contracts with domestic and international gas suppliers to immediately bring down the cost of this intervention... We are also accelerating all sources of domestic energy, including North Sea oil and gas production... We will end the moratorium on extracting our huge reserves of shale, which could get gas flowing in as soon as six months, where there is local support."
On 8 September 2022 New British PM Liz Truss announces a cap on energy bills to combat cost-of-living crisis
On 8 Sept 2022 - UK: Energy Supply Taskforce to hold talks with renewables sector over fixed-price contracts. A new Energy Supply Taskforce, led by Madelaine McTernan who headed up the UK’s successful Vaccine Taskforce, has begun negotiations with domestic and international suppliers to agree long-term contracts that reduce the price they charge for energy and increase the security of its supply.
The Taskforce and Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy will negotiate with renewable producers to reduce the prices they charge as well.
Liz Truss did work for Shell as a commercial and finance analyst for a short period after graduating from university. She sends 4 identical "Letters of last resort" to 4 Trident captains of nuclear deterrence submarines. Liz Truss asked about nuclear weapons: 'I'm ready to do it' 'I'm ready to do it'.
One of Liz Truss’s early tasks will be to write instructions by hand to each of Britain’s four nuclear submarine commanders, directing them how to respond in the event of an all-out attack that will have killed her and destroyed the UK. They are known as the letters of last resort.
But first, Truss will receive a briefing from Britain’s military chiefs on how the Trident nuclear deterrent operates – including the likely military and human consequences of authorising a retaliatory strike.
It is not necessary for Truss to write the letters immediately after the briefing; the new prime minister has time to reflect. The existing letters, written by Boris Johnson, can remain in force, most obviously for the submarine currently out at sea – at least one must be on patrol at all times for the nuclear deterrent to remain continuous.
The letters are destroyed unopened whenever a Prime Minister leaves office, note that she said during the selection process that she would not hesitate to use nuclear weapons to defend Britain while rishi Sunak did not. On 24 August 2022 The foreign secretary, Liz Truss, says that "She is not afraid to use nuclear weapons if she becomes prime minister."
"I am confident that together we can ride out the storm"
Liz Truss delivered her first speech as British prime minister on Tuesday after being formally invited by Queen Elizabeth II to form a government.
The new prime minister said her top priorities are to cut taxes, boost energy security and improve the country's health care system.
"We shouldn't be daunted by the challenges we face," she said outside No. 10 Downing Street. "As strong as the storm may be, I know that the British people are stronger. Our country was built by people who get things done. We have huge reserves of talent, of energy and determination. I am confident that together we can ride out the storm."

Finland and Sweden on Sunday announced plans to offer billions of dollars in liquidity guarantees to power companies in their countries after Russia’s Gazprom shut the Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline, deepening Europe’s energy crisis. “This has had the ingredients for a kind of a Lehman Brothers of energy industry,” Finnish Economic Affairs Minister Mika Lintila said on Sunday.
On 6 September 2022 - GER: Uniper CEO: "The worst is yet to come". After the jump at the beginning of the week, gas prices are falling again significantly. Uniper CEO Klaus-Dieter Maubach is convinced that this will not last. He believes that the business ties with Gazprom have been severed forever.
We are making ourselves independent of Russia', Chancellor Scholz said on Friday
Soaring power and gas prices have rocked energy companies across Europe, forcing utilities and traders to secure extra funds from governments and banks to cover margin call requirements.
Various conspiracy theories that emerged after Karl-Peter Griesemann's plane crash, suggesting a link between his company and the Nord Stream pipelines. However, these claims were refuted by the company, and several fact-checking organizations confirmed that there was no such connection. Official statement from Griesemann Gruppe explicitly states: "The Griesemann Gruppe does not have any business relationships with Nord Stream AG."
Josep Borrell, the EU’s chief diplomat, on Monday acknowledged that certain political factions in the bloc wanted the EU to drop its support for Ukraine, push Kyiv into a ceasefire and abandon sanctions against Russia to ease economic pressure on European countries. He said those views were “not representative” of the position adopted by member states.

The UK's new prime minister has plenty of foreign policy experience, but it might not be enough to solve problems abroad and at home.
The UK's new prime minister, Liz Truss, has been in power only a day, but she is already running out of time. So grave are the problems Britain faces. Inflation has hit double digits and energy bills are set to rise by 80 per cent next month. More crises are brewing at home and abroad.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Friday that "Russia's war in Ukraine presented Europe with the opportunity to finally end its dependence on Russian energy".
Blinken made the comments after a surprise visit to Ukraine while en route to Brussels where he said he would be discussing energy security at a meeting with NATO representatives.
"There's also a tremendous opportunity … finally once and for all, to move away from this dependence on Russia, to get rid of the chokehold that Russia has on Europe, using energy as a weapon, and to diversify supply, diversify routes," Blinken said.
Russian gas giant Gazprom last week shut the Nord Stream pipeline to Germany citing the need for repairs, with the Kremlin saying sanctions have prevented the proper maintenance of gas infrastructure.
"The fact that Russia has cut off the Nord Stream pipeline again is further evidence that it is so vitally strategic for Europe to move away from dependence on Russian energy because Putin has shown he will use it as a weapon and he’s not going to stop now," Blinken said.

Putin statement from 7 September 2022 about Nordstream at Eastern Economic Forum plenary session.
Putin: "...Regarding Nord Stream 1, our German partners have agreed that all technical aspects of Nord Stream 1, including the maintenance of gas-pumping turbine units, are subject to British law because – I myself was unaware of this and learned about this from Mr Miller – Gazprom had to sign a contract for the maintenance of these units made by Siemens not with the Siemens main office but with its subsidiary based in the United Kingdom, which slapped sanctions on Gazprom, and agreed to repair the turbines at a Siemens plant in Canada.
What do we have to do with all of that? Canada finally took it but yielded to numerous requests coming from Germany and gave it to Germany, whereas under an agreement with a Siemens subsidiary in the UK, the turbines were to be shipped straight to St Petersburg. Logistics arrangements have changed and the contract has to be revised. The British-based Siemens subsidiary will not even respond to Gazprom’s inquiries..." (171)

SWEDEN AND UK: POSEIDON ANTI-SUBMARINE FLIGHTS IN EARLY SEPTEMBER

On 8 September 2022 - SWE+UK/NOR/FRA: JFD Successfully Completes NATO Submarine Rescue System Northern Crown Exercise in Sweden. Gary Lindhofer, Head of Defence – Services, JFD, said: “The relationship between the Swedish Navy and the NSRS Participant Nations continues to remain strong and is essential for providing submarine rescue support and contingency. The final activity of the exercise involved the airlift of the SRV and its supporting equipment by the UK Royal Air Force, using a Boeing C-17 Globemaster from Sweden back to Prestwich in the UK."
ECHOES IN DEEP: THE FIRST BALTIC INCIDENT?

Between 9-15 Sept 2022 - GER: The two GER military vessels spent a total of six days cruising in close proximity to the two later explosion sites. The ships‘ presence was not part of the naval exercise „Northern Coasts 2022“, which also included a German submarine and a mine sweeper. That started later. Was the meeting at MARCOM involving high-ranking military officials from various NATO countries, including the UK, to clarify the situation? Was the UK explaining the possible presence as routine maintenance or surveillance, unrelated to any aggressive intent? Was this why Mette Frederiksen later flied directly to the UK to meet Liz Truss? (037, 117, 126) Did NATO launch an internal investigation to ensure no member state is acting unilaterally in ways that could destabilize the alliance? This might be the reason of increased air and naval surveillance around critical infrastructure to prevent future incidents or misunderstandings. (118, 131, 144, 145, 146, 177, 179)

These discussions seem to be focused on arms deliveries and support for Ukraine. There does not seem to be a sign that Norway was briefing its allies about threat to their key infrastructure, yet. On 8 September 2022 Swiss court gives Nord Stream 2 more time to avoid insolvency. In May, the court granted a provisional moratorium against bankruptcy proceedings for the first time, which was valid until September 10. This period has now been extended by another four months. The Swiss company behind the Russian gas pipeline Nord Stream 2 has received a four-month extension to try to repay its debts.

Nord Stream 2 AG will not go bankrupt at least until 10th of January 2023 thanks to another decision from Zug court.
On 10 September 2022 Nord Stream 2 gas link operator wins further stay of bankruptcy: court
On May 11, Switzerland-based Nord Stream 2 AG was awarded a provisional stay of bankruptcy until Sept. 10 2022, according to a notice in the Swiss Official Gazette of Commerce. In a new notice dated Sept. 8, a court in Zug awarded a four-month extension of the stay of bankruptcy from Sept. 10 until Jan. 10, 2023. There have been calls from within Germany in recent weeks to allow Nord Stream 2 to begin operations after flows through the first Nord Stream system were curtailed and then halted altogether, with gas prices having surged to new records as a result.
It is highly possible that the perpetrator was waiting for the decision. The Swiss court decided to postpone the bankruptcy for half a year. The window of opportunity due to the temperature and weather conditions in Baltic sea would not allow such operation in the middle of the winter so the time was short. EU Foreign minister Borrell disclosed that some parties, likely Germany, were lobbying for the end of the conflict and relaxing sanctions. It was likely Germany needing energy supplies as the energy crisis was spinning out of control. The only possibility left to end Nord Stream 2 and Nord stream 1 pipelines was a physical liquidations. The head of Swedish investigation later in March 2023 stated that the perpetrator was a state with significant knowledge and resources. (053)

On 12 September 2022 Study: "The Legality of Russia’s Indefinite Suspension of NordStream 1 Gas Pipeline Under International Law"
General Remarks on the Legality of the Suspension of the Nord Stream 1 Gas Pipeline
Unilateral sanctions, irrespective of whether they are tacit or explicit, are lawful under international law if they constitute acts of retorsion or countermeasures. Accordingly, to evaluate the legality of the suspension of the Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline, it is necessary to question whether Russia’s suspension constitutes an act of retorsion or countermeasure.
Retorsions are ab initio lawful, albeit unfriendly, acts, such as lawful embargoes and the expulsion of diplomats, and they can be imposed to achieve both legal and political objectives of sanctions senders.
Russia can impose retorsions against the G7 price cap plan and/or more broadly EU sanctions which have been imposed against Russia since February 2022.
The analysis has first showed that Russia’s suspension of Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline is in fact a unilateral sanction imposed by Russia against the EU in reaction to the G7 price cap plan and/or more broadly EU sanctions which have been imposed against Russia since February 2022.
Secondly, it discussed whether this suspension could be considered retorsions or countermeasures under international law.
Lastly, if the indefinite nature of the suspension is revealed, and its legality was evaluated in terms of the termination process requirements within the concepts of retorsions and countermeasures...
However, since there is no binding multilateral rule regulating gas trade on Russia regarding the suspension of gas flow, Russia prima facie does not violate its international obligations owed to the EU by its suspension decision (it should be highlighted that other international obligations beyond gas trading were not discussed in this post)...
Hence, its act may constitute an act of retorsion. Unlike countermeasures, since retorsions do not involve requirements regarding the termination process of unilateral sanctions, Russia is free to indefinitely suspend Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline under current international law so long as the suspension continues to be an act of retorsion.
Consequently, it is necessary to conduct further research and regular review concerning whether Russia’s suspension is consistent with the current and future international obligations of Russia towards the EU.
On 13 September 2022 Russian President Vladimir Putin held talks with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and told him that the problems with gas supply to Europe through the Nord Stream-1 pipeline had been caused by Western sanctions on Moscow
On 13 September 2022 TASS agency: "Deliveries of Russian gas to Europe in transit through Ukraine on September 13 remain the same - at around 42.4 mln cubic meters per day. Deliveries via the Nord Stream gas pipeline have been completely halted until equipment is repaired"
On 13 September 2022 - RU: TASS agency: "Nord Stream problems were caused by sanctions on Russia — Putin". Describing the current situation in the European energy sector, Vladimir Putin stressed that "Russia has been and remains a reliable supplier of energy resources, fulfilling all its contractual obligations, and interruptions, for example, in the operation of the Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline, are caused by anti-Russian sanctions that interfere with its maintenance," the statement said.
Many assets were moved to the exercise. As a result less assets to detect threats to Nordstream pipelines were available in the Baltic sea.

Nearly 20 ships from Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia will take part in Rekin-22 maritime exercises in the Baltic Sea set to begin on Friday (16-09-2022).
On Thursday (15-09-2022), the Polish Navy announced that military maritime maneuvers under the codename Rekin-22 will begin on Friday in the territorial waters of the Baltic Sea and the international South Baltic.
Poland's Marine Operations Center spokesperson Piotr Dulas said in a statement that the maneuvers “will be supported by Air Force aircraft and helicopters, Special Forces and specialized shore units.”
Dulas added that this year's Rekin-22 maneuvers will comprehensively implement the operation of protecting shipping routes, preventing the country from being blockaded from the sea and ensuring the free flow of goods to allied countries.
“Nowadays, when maritime transport is even more important for the economy, ensuring safe sea lines of communication which guarantee the uninterrupted functioning of the supply chain and uninterrupted trade by sea is one of the most important issues not only in Europe, but also in the world", Dulas said in the statement.
The Shark-22 maritime exercises are due to wrap up on Sunday.
On 15 Sept 2022 Manoeuvres codenamed Shark-22 will take place in the Baltic Sea
The Navy, in a communiqué, sent on Thursday, informed about the military manoeuvres under the codename Rekin-22 starting on Friday in the territorial waters of the Baltic Sea and the international South Baltic.
A spokesman for the Maritime Operations Centre – Maritime Component Command Cmdr Lt Piotr Dulas conveyed that the manoeuvres will integrate the activities of tactical compounds operating in the maritime domain, such as the 3rd Flotilla of Ships, the 8th Flotilla of Coastal Defence and the Naval Aviation Brigade.
Additionally, the ships’ actions at sea will be supported by aircraft and helicopters of the Air Force, Special Forces and specialised shore units such as the Maritime Missile Unit, the 6th Radioelectronic Centre, anti-aircraft squadrons, sapper battalions or the Naval Command Battalion – enumerated Dulas.
‘Shark’ operations will also be carried out in cooperation with the forces of the Baltic Naval Squadron, which includes ships from the Baltic countries as well as specialists from the Marine Unit of the Border Guard, the Maritime Search and Rescue Service and the maritime offices in Szczecin and Gdynia.
Dulas emphasised in the communiqué that within the framework of this year’s Rekin-22 manoeuvres, a comprehensive operation will be carried out to protect shipping routes, prevent the blockade of the country from the sea and ensure the free flow of goods to allied countries.
As indicated by a representative of the Maritime Operations Centre – Maritime Component Command, a number of episodes have been planned during the manoeuvres reflecting the widest possible spectrum of threats that may currently occur at sea.
Nowadays, when maritime transport is even more important for the economy, ensuring safe sea lines of communication guaranteeing uninterrupted functioning of the supply chain and uninterrupted trade by sea is one of the most important issues not only in Europe, but also in the world,’ noted Lieutenant Commander Dulas in the communiqué.
The COM-DKM representative points out the significant role of the Baltic Sea and transshipped goods in Polish ports. He stated that they account for up to 10 per cent of the country’s total budget.
Between 2,000 and more than 3,000 vessels pass through the Baltic every day. There is international trade, transfer of raw materials and passenger traffic. Polish ports handle more than 100 million tonnes of cargo a year, including strategic raw materials such as oil and liquefied gas,” noted Dulas.
He stressed that as part of the Rekin-22 manoeuvres, a number of ship and aviation actions will be undertaken to cover maritime transport and shipping safety.
It is mainly about countering attacks from water and air and submarine attacks, he pointed out.
He added in the communiqué that the manoeuvres also include anti-mine, anti-terrorism, anti-piracy, as well as stabilisation, peace enforcement and humanitarian operations. Exercises of this nature are key to creating the atmosphere of maritime security necessary for the unhindered development of maritime transport and trade.

On 16 September 2022 ‘Don’t, don’t, don’t’: Biden presses Putin on nuclear weapons. US President Joe Biden has urged Russian President Vladimir Putin to not use tactical nuclear or chemical weapons after a series of military losses in Ukraine.
Asked by an American reporter with the show 60 Minutes on US network CBS what he would say to Putin if he considered using such weapons, Biden said: “Don’t. Don’t. Don’t. It would change the face of war unlike anything since World War II.”
Biden said the US response would be “consequential” – but declined to give details.
“[Russia] would become more of a pariah in the world than they ever have been,” Biden said. “Depending on the extent of what they do, will determine what response would occur.”
Asked about Biden’s comments, RIA Novosti quoted Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov as saying: “Read [Russia’s nuclear] doctrine. Everything is written there.”
Under Moscow’s doctrine, nuclear weapons can be used after “an aggression against Russia or its ally with the use of mass destruction weapons”, or “when the very existence of the state is under threat”.
